— Recovery coaching

Psychosocial recovery coaching in Queensland.

Psychosocial recovery coaching is an NDIS support for people living with a mental health condition. A recovery coach helps you build resilience and coping strategies, make sense of your plan, coordinate your supports and work towards your own recovery goals — at your pace, within a strengths-based framework. It is funded from the Capacity Building budget in your plan, with no out-of-pocket cost.

What a recovery coach actually does

The work starts with your story rather than your diagnosis: what is working, what has worked before, what you want your week to look like. From there we build a recovery plan you recognise as yours.

  • Building routines, coping strategies and early-warning plans with you
  • Explaining what your plan funds, in plain language
  • Finding and coordinating providers — clinical, community and mainstream
  • Working alongside your treating team, family and existing supports
  • Staying in contact through the harder weeks, not only the good ones
  • Documenting what is and is not working, ready for your plan review

Funded as: Psychosocial Recovery Coach, under Capacity Building.

Recovery coach or support coordinator?

Both organise supports. A recovery coach is specific to psychosocial disability, is usually funded for more hours, and works within a recovery framework — which in practice means more time spent building your capacity and less time simply booking services.

If you are not sure which is funded in your plan, send it to us and we will tell you what it says. If a support coordinator is the better fit, we will say so.

Recovery coaching questions

What does a psychosocial recovery coach do?

A psychosocial recovery coach works with people living with a mental health condition to build recovery-focused capacity: understanding the NDIS plan, building routines and coping strategies, coordinating supports, and staying connected to services through the harder periods. Coaches typically spend more time with a participant than a support coordinator does, and the work is built around the participant's own recovery goals.

What is the difference between a recovery coach and a support coordinator?

A support coordinator organises and connects supports across any disability type. A psychosocial recovery coach does that too, but specifically for psychosocial disability, with more hours, a recovery-oriented framework, and an explicit focus on building the participant's own capacity over time. A plan can fund one or the other, and occasionally both if the need is documented.

How is recovery coaching funded?

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is a Capacity Building support in an NDIS plan. It is claimed against that budget at or under the published NDIS price limits, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to the participant.

Do I need a mental health diagnosis to get recovery coaching?

The NDIS funds supports on the basis of functional impact rather than diagnosis alone, but psychosocial recovery coaching is intended for participants whose disability is psychosocial. Evidence from a treating team usually accompanies the request at a plan review.

What happens on a bad week?

That is the point of the arrangement. We keep in contact, adjust what is realistic for that week, talk to the providers who need to know, and pick the plan back up when things settle — without treating a setback as a failure.
